One of the stranger stories touched on in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, the Zac Efron-starring Ted Bundy biopic that premiers May 3 on Netflix, is that of Carole Ann Boone (Kaya Scodelario). Boone dated Bundy before his arrest, claimed to believe he was innocent, and eventually married him after he’d been sentenced to death. In an even wilder turn of events, Boone claimed to have given birth to Bundy’s child, a daughter named Rose.
Ted Bundy received a death sentence in Florida in 1979; at the end of a second trial, months later, Boone used a quirk in state law to legally marry him. In September 1982, reports emerged that Boone was pregnant—and the child was Bundy’s.
It wasn’t immediately clear how that could have happened, with Bundy on death row. Boone lived nearby and was a frequent visitor, though no conjugal visits were allowed to death row inmates. “I don’t have to explain anything about anyone to anybody,” Boone told a reporter at the time, and she reportedly gave birth to her daughter on October 24, 1981. Since then, little has been verified about Rose Bundy—like her mother, she’s chosen not to publicly associate her life with Ted Bundy. Internet sleuths and armchair detectives have speculated about her, even claiming to have pictures of her, but it’s not clear what they’d hope to gain by outing her.
Rule, for her part, writes, “I have deliberately avoided knowing anything about Ted’s ex-wife and daughter’s whereabouts because they deserve privacy. I don’t want to know where they are; I never want to be caught off guard by some reporter’s question about them. All I know is that Ted’s daughter has grown up to be a fine young woman.”
