How to Make a Doctor-Approved Face Mask in 10 Minutes—Without Sewing

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends wearing cloth face coverings whenever you can’t maintain social distancing—like at the grocery store.

Cloth face masks can be found on Etsy and at clothing retailers, but wait times can be lengthy, which means you may want to make one at home.

Michael Cellini, D.O., a Senior Diagnostic & Interventional Radiology Resident, recently showed people how to make their own masks in a new YouTube video.

First, Dr. Cellini explains that cloth masks are not meant to prevent you from getting COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. Instead, they act as a barrier to help decrease the transmission of COVID-19.

Dr. Cellini follows the tutorial from another YouTuber Jan Howell, who released a video about making no-sew masks. The doctor uses material from one of his medical scrub shirts, but explains that you can use an old t-shirt. Although there’s still not enough research about the best materials for at-home masks, one study found that cotton pillowcases and t-shirts provided the best barriers.

He uses a measuring tape to measure the correct dimensions and cuts the fabric. The directions makes two masks. However, Dr. Cellini opts to make his covering thicker and folds the cloth over to double up on material. At the end, Dr. Cellini is impressed with the results considering the mask required zero sewing skills.

“This actually does a pretty good job,” says Dr. Cellini. “I mean it’s free. You can make your own in two seconds like I did.”
