Make like a star and hang ten! It seems there are even more celebrities who surf than one might expect. And while Hollywood’s coastal location means the famed southern California waves are right there, it’s still surprising just how many celebs pick up a surfboard and head for the beach.
While some actors and actresses are serious about the sport (we’re looking at you, Liam Hemsworth, and many of your wetsuit-clad Australian brethren), others may get into surfer culture every once in a while for fun while, still more may just take longboard lessons on vacation, trying to stand up more times than they wipe out! Others, including Kourtney Kardashian, are more wakeboard fans.
One thing is for certain though: Besides being a blast, the water sport offers an amazing, full-body workout. Maybe that’s Helen Hunt and Rob Lowe’s secret for looking ageless well into their 50s! Other dedicated and skilled wave catchers include Cameron Diaz and Adam Sandler.
Then there are celebs who learned to ride breakers for movies. Matthew McConaughey, who starred in the 2008 flick Surfer, Dude, said he picked up the intense activity so he could be convincing in the role. “I started surfing to get ready for this film,” the Texas native said at the time. “I’ve been surfing for a little less than two years. The film and the script came first, then we got financing, and then I started to learn to surf, so I’ve been surfing for a little less than two years.” Keanu Reeves — who starred with Patrick Swayze in maybe the most iconic surfing movie, Point Break, picked up the sport for the 1991 classic — then kept at it. Fun fact: Red Hot Chili Peppers’ frontman Anthony Kiedis, who’s a passionate surfer, was also in the flick.
No matter how they came to the sport, it’s clear from looking through the photos over the years that surfing offers a thrill and brings some joy to stars’ lives. Scroll through to see amazing pics of celebrities surfing!
