Type 2 diabetes: The lesser known sexual problem caused by high blood sugar levels

Type 2 diabetes is a lifelong condition which causes a person’s blood sugar level to become too high. Blood sugar levels rise due to a dysfunction in the way insulin is released. When this occurs symptoms such as blurry vision and increased thirst may occur. Sexual ailments may also occur other than erectile dysfunction.

It’s well-known that for a man suffering with type 2 diabetes, erectile dysfunction is a reality too.

In fact, more than half of men with diabetes will get erectile dysfunction.

Men who have diabetes are more than three times more likely to develop erectile dysfunction than men who do not have diabetes.

However, there is another sexual ailment one may suffer from which is also caused by high blood sugar.

National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney disease said diabetes can cause retrograde ejaculation which is when part or all of your semen goes into your bladder instead of out of your penis during ejaculation.

It said: “During retrograde ejaculation, semen enters your bladder, mixes with urine, and is safely urinated out.

“A urine sample after ejaculation can show it you have retrograde ejaculation.

“Some men with retrograde ejaculation may not ejaculate at all.”

Diabetes.co.uk added: “Retrograde ejaculation is an uncommon type of ejaculation problem.

“It occurs when semen enters the bladder instead of coming out through the urethra during orgasm.

“Retrograde ejaculation can result in male infertility, and treatment would be required for fertility to be restored.

“Diabetes can cause retrograde ejaculation, in which poor blood sugar control over a long-term period leads to neuropathy of the bladder.

“Retrograde ejaculation can occur in diabetic males as a consequence of diabetic autonomic neuropathy.”

What happens during retrograde ejaculation?

The condition does not affect a person’s ability to get an erection and one can still experience orgasms.

There are a range of unusual symptoms, however, which will occur during retrograde ejaculation.

These symptoms include producing cloudy urine following an orgasm, dry orgasms, or infertility.

Men with diabetes are more likely to have Peyronie’s disease, also known as penile curvature.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney disease explained: “Men with Peyronie’s disease have scar tissue, called plaque, in the penis, making it curve when erect.

“Curves in the penis can make sexual intercourse painful or difficult.

“Some men with Peyrionie’s disease may have erectile dysfunction.”
