On Thursday Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, deputy Chief Medical Officer, estimated that there could be as many as 60,000 flu deaths this winter, which would make it the deadliest outbreak for 50 years.
He said: “Not many people got flu last year because of Covid-19 restrictions, so there isn’t as much natural immunity in our communities as usual.”
But Philip Davies, Conservative MP for Shipley, said these estimated deaths were an “entirely predictable consequence” of lockdowns, which he branded “a colossal mistake”.
He added: “The obvious fact that lockdowns would inevitably lead to a much higher death toll from flu and pneumonia this winter due to a lack of immunity was something that many people warned about.
“Yet Sage and the Government ploughed on anyway.
“One day people will conclude that the lockdowns were a colossal mistake.”
