In 2016, Naomie Harris was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in Moonlight. Yet, the British actress has many more notable film credits to her name. The 46-year-old has starred in Bond films spectre (2015) and Skyfall (2012), and 28 Days Later (2002). “My obsession with health definitely started as a result of having scoliosis as a young child,” she told Health.

Harris explained she went through a “huge operation” which meant she had to spend a “month in hospital”.

In the 2020 interview, Harris revealed that she had a “rib removed”, a “lung deflated”, and a “mental rod put along [her] spine”.

“It forces you to have a very different relationship with your body,” she stated.

“I know what it’s like to spend a month not being able to walk. And I never, ever want to be in that position ever again.”

Scoliosis

The NHS explains that scoliosis is the “abnormal twisting and curvature of the spine”.

Typical signs include a visibly curved spine, one shoulder being higher than the other, or one hip being more prominent than the other.

Scoliosis might also lead to clothes “not hanging properly”; a person with the condition might have a “prominent ribcage”, or a difference in leg lengths.

“Back pain is common in adults with scoliosis,” the NHS adds. “Young people with scoliosis may also experience some discomfort but it’s less likely to be severe.”

While scoliosis can develop at any age, it is most commonly diagnosed in children between the ages of 10 to 15.

While some cases may naturally improve over time, bracing or casting could be utilised to help halt the curve’s progression.

If, however, bracing or casting does not deter the condition from worsening, an operation might be necessary.

“This will usually involve inserting metal rods into the back to stabilise the spine, which are lengthened at regular intervals as your child grows,” the NHS elaborates.

What causes scoliosis?

Scoliosis is not linked to bad posture, exercise, or diet, so what causes the curvature of the spine?

“In most cases, the cause of scoliosis is unknown and it cannot usually be prevented,” the NHS states.

There can be a family history of the condition, which suggests a possible genetic link.

How is scoliosis diagnosed?

A doctor will want to check the spine, ribs, hips, and shoulders before a referral to a specialist is made.

“You may be asked to bend forward to see if any areas are particularly prominent,” the NHS adds.

“For example, one of your shoulders may be higher than the other or there may be a bulge in your back.”

An orthopaedic specialist will require an X-ray to confirm a scoliosis diagnosis.

Naomie Harris stars in her Oscar nominated performance, Moonlight, which is airing on BBC Two on Monday, October 3 at 11.15pm.
