Substances widely used as plasticisers and flame retardants were found in discount salons. In some cases, staff faced more chemical exposure than electronic waste workers, a team from the University of Toronto, Canada, said.

Study co-author Dr Victoria Arrandale said: “Nail technicians have raised concerns, including worries about reproductive, respiratory, skin and musculoskeletal health, for many years now.”

The report appeared in journal Environmental Science and Technology.
