Expert shares the sleeping position that could slash risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s

Most people know that getting enough sleep is not only good for boosting energy levels throughout the day but also for benefiting overall health. However, according to research, there is one specific sleeping position that could ward off neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.

In 2015, the Journal of Neuroscience posted findings from Stony Brook University which revealed: “The lateral position more efficiently rids the brain of solutes that may contribute to disease.”

The lateral position, which is essentially sleeping on your side, may more effectively remove brain waste compared with sleeping on one’s back or stomach.

The experts also discovered that this proved to be an “important practice to help reduce the chances of developing Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other neurological diseases”.

Narwan Amini, an expert from Eachnight.com said: “Sleeping on your side has been found to be the most beneficial position for your brain, with the position helping your brain to clear out interstitial waste faster than other positions.

“This leads to multiple benefits including potentially reducing the risk of developing neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s.”

Researchers from Stony Brook University used MRI images of the brain’s glymphatic pathway, a complex system that clears wastes and other harmful chemical solutes from the brain, while rodent subjects were sleeping.

Luckily, side sleeping is the most common position for humans and animals.

It is believed that humans have evolved to prefer sleeping in this position in order to help the brain clear out its waste.

And it isn’t just your brain health which a lateral sleeping position can be beneficial for.

Ms Amini said: “For an average person, sleeping on your side is generally considered the healthiest sleeping position.

“It provides adequate alignment and support for your spine, while also minimising acid reflux.

“The ideal way to sleep on your side is with a medium to soft mattress that provides plenty of pressure relief and cushion for your hips and shoulders.”

Side sleeping can also help to eliminate back pain by removing stress from your lumbar spine and lower back.

Getting enough sleep each night is crucial for health and wellness.

According to the NHS: “Most adults need between six and nine hours of sleep every night.

“By working out what time you need to wake up, you can set a regular bedtime schedule.

“It is also important to try and wake up at the same time every day.”
