Some 944,700 people in households are estimated to have had coronavirus in the week to August 28, the office for National Statistics said.
This is the first time the figure has fallen below a million since the beginning of June.
It is also the lowest total since October 2021, when the number was 942,600. infections hit 3.8 million in July during the spread of the omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants, but have been waning.
The ONS said virus cases are continuing to drop in England and Wales while the trend is uncertain in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
It revealed one in 70 people had it that week in England, down from one in 60 a week earlier.
In Wales, the figure was one in 95, a drop from one in 65. in Scotland and Northern Ireland it stood at one in 50.
