‘Collagen banking’ can help stave off signs of ageing for longer, says doctor

Collagen is a protein the body produces, providing structure and strength to a person’s skin, muscles and bones.

But production reduces at 1 percent a year up to the menopause and then accelerates to 1.5 percent reduction for the rest of your life, which means by the age of 50 you have half the collagen you had when you were born.

The American Academy of Dermatology Association recommends some other ways to reduce premature skin ageing:

  • Protect your skin from the sun every day
  • Apply self-tanner rather than get a tan
  • If you smoke, stop
  • Avoid repetitive facial expressions
  • Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet
  • Drink less alcohol
  • Exercise most days of the week
  • Cleanse your skin gently
  • Wash your face twice a day and after sweating heavily
  • Apply a facial moisturiser every day
  • Stop using skin care products that sting or burn
