Brad Pitt says his health condition is a ‘mystery’ to him

While Brad Pitt hasn’t officially been diagnosed with the condition, known as prosopagnosia, the dad-of-six believes he has it. “Nobody believes me!” the 59-year-old told GQ Magazine. In an earlier interview, with Esquire in 2013, Brad revealed the challenges that come with face blindness. “So many people hate me because they think I’m disrespecting them,” he said.

“Every now and then, someone will give me context, and I’ll say, ‘Thank you for helping me.’ But I p**s more people off.”

He continued: “You get this thing, like, ‘You’re being egotistical. You’re being conceited.” But it’s a mystery to me, man.

“I can’t grasp a face, and yet I come from such a design/aesthetic point of view. I am going to get it tested.”

Prosopagnosia (i.e. face blindness) is a recognised health condition by the NHS.

While Brad Pitt hasn’t officially been diagnosed with the condition, known as prosopagnosia, the dad-of-six believes he has it.

The health body said it’s “where you have difficulty recognising people’s face”.

To elaborate, the health body adds: “You’ll still see the parts of a face normally, but all faces may look the same to you.

“It affects people differently. Some people may not be able to tell the difference between strangers or people they do not know well.

“Others may not recognise the faces of friends and family or even their own face.”

Additional symptoms of prosopagnosia can include:

  • Recognising emotions on people’s faces
  • Recognising people’s age and gender
  • Recognising characters and following plots in TV programmes or films
  • Recognising other things, such as cars or animals
  • Finding your way around.

While there is no treatment for prosopagnosia, there are ways to manage the health condition.

To help buffer against seeming rude to others, the NHS suggests using “people’s voices or body language to tell them apart”.

Other suggestions include:

  • Tell people about the condition before you meet them
  • Ask people you’re close to for help identifying others
  • Ask people to introduce themselves when you greet them
  • Make a note of distinctive features about a person such as a hairstyle, jewellery or accessories
  • Use name tags or write down the names of colleagues and where they sit at work.

There might be a genetic link for prosopagnosia and the condition could emerge following brain damage.

For example, prosopagnosia could develop soon after suffering from a stroke.

Face blindness might also occur in a person who has Alzheimer’s disease or is suffering from inflammation in the brain.

Face Blind UK stated: “Many people are unaware that they have face blindness, usually being unaware that it exists as a specific neurological condition.”

As for Brad, he’s still managed a successful acting career despite face blindness.

Brad Pitt starred in Meet Joe Black, which is BBC One, Tuesday, March 28 at 10:40pm.
