Supplements to help you lose weight brings about a variety of products promising to be the holy grail. When it comes to choosing which ones are best, opting for the supplements backed up by science is always the best choice.
Fibre is a carbohydrate found in plant foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Unlike other carbs, it isn’t easily digested by the body, so it passes quickly through the system without causing the blood sugar to rise.
All fruits and vegetables have fibre but it is mostly concentrated in the skin, seeds and membranes.
Harvard Health said: “A study published in Annals of Internal Medicine suggests that something as simple as aiming to eat 30 grams of fibre each day can help you lose weight, lower your blood pressure and improve your body’s response to insulin just as effectively as a more complicated diet.”
Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Medical School compared the effectiveness of two diets with help from 240 volunteers.
Half were asked to follow the American Heart Association’s diet for preventing heart disease, in which you try to eat more fruits and vegetables, high-fibre foods, fish and lean protein but also cut back on salt, sugar, fat and alcohol.
The other half were asked to follow a diet in which the only goal was to eat 30 grams or more of fibre each day.
Neither group received advice or recommendations for exercise. All of them had high blood pressure, high blood sugar and high cholesterol and were overweight.

Dr Frank Hu, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School said: “In addition to weight control, higher fibre diets can also help prevent type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.”
Rosehip is also known as Rosa canina L. or Rosaceae and is widely distributed in and around Europe.
The fruit of this plant, rosehip, has been used as a diuretic, laxative, anti-gout, and anti-rheumatic remedy in traditional European medicine.
Studies show that rose hips from the Rosa canina plant are high in an antioxidant called tiliroside, which may have fat-burning properties.
Rose hips have been linked to numerous benefits, including improved immunity, heart health, weight loss, and skin ageing.
In a study published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, a daily intake of rosehip extract to help decrease belly fat was investigated.
The study was conducted with a 12-week, single-centre, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study of 32 subjects who had a body mass index of between 25 and 30.
The subjects were assigned to two random groups, and they received one tablet of placebo or rosehip that contained 100 mg of rosehip extract once each day for 12 weeks with no dietary intervention.
The abdominal fat area and body fat percent of each patient was measured alongside body weight and body mass index.
The study found an impressive weight loss in the rosehip group indicating the supplement may be beneficial for burning fat.
When it comes to taking supplements for weight loss, always do your research around the company who makes the pills, and the retailer you’re buying from.
It’s important to take into account any allergies or products which do not agree with you and if experiencing any unusual side effects to stop taking the pills immediately.
It is strongly advised to speak to your GP before embarking on any new supplements.
