Pope Francis has filmed a global PSA urging people to get vaccinated against Covid-19. In a special video which the spiritual leader recorded in Spanish with the nonprofit Ad Council, and which was subsequently translated into English, he described taking the vaccine as an “act of love,” both for yourself and for others. He also stated his belief that the life-saving medicine needs to be made available to everybody.
“Thanks to God’s grace and to the work of many, we now have vaccines to protect us from Covid-19,” he said. “They bring hope to end the pandemic, but only if they are available to all and if we collaborate with one another.”
“Getting the vaccines that are authorized by the respective authorities is an act of love,” he continued. “And helping the majority of people to do so is an act of love. Love for oneself, love for our families and friends, and love for all peoples… Getting vaccinated is a simple yet profound way to care for one another, especially the most vulnerable. I pray to God that each one of us can make his or her own small gesture of love. No matter how small, love is always grand.”
Pope Francis received his vaccination in March this year, and voiced his support for widespread uptake of the vaccine at the time, calling it an “ethical action” and saying that to those who would decline it: “You are gambling with your health, you are gambling with your life, but you are also gambling with the lives of others.”
