When blood clots form they block the coronary artery which cuts off blood supply to the heart muscle and the person has a heart attack. Heart attacks (Myocardial infarction) are much more curable now than ever. Sudden cardiac arrests however are a lot more deadly, and in 95 percent of cases sudden cardiac arrests are fatal. When you notice your breathing becoming unusual and in particular a wheezing coming from your chest, this could be a major symptom that you might have a heart attack.
Heart failure can cause fluid to build up in your lungs and in your surrounding airways.
When the airways are blocked it will be difficult to breath and a shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing will occur. This is a major sign that you could potentially have a heart attack.
The persistent cough or wheezing with a whit or pink blood-tinged phlegm could mean a heart failure, and the reason is due to the fluid build up in the lungs, meaning part of the heart muscles don’t get enough blood.
The most common cause of heart attacks is a partial or complete blockage of a blood vessel, preventing enough oxygen or blood from reaching the heart.
Ways to help prevent heart attacks:
- Avoid exposure to pollutants
- Limit your alcohol
- Manage stress
- Make sure you are getting enough sleep
Professor Simon Redwood, cardiologist consultant at London Bridge Hospital said: “To reduce risk you should get your blood pressure and cholesterol checked and get checked for diabetes, stop smoking and exercise regularly meaning at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise five times a week.
“Avoid being overweight, reduce cholesterol-containing foods including animal fats, dairy products and increase intake of fruit, fibre, vegetables and oily fish.”
A diet that is full of high-fat foods will only make the situation worse as the fatty plaques will build up in your arteries.
It is important to know which fats to stay away from and which one’s are good for your heart.
Saturated fats is the absolute worst type of fat you can eat.
Foods high in saturated fat include:
- Meat pies
- Butter
- Sausage
- Cream
- Cakes
- Biscuits
Heart attacks are increasing as we live longer but the mortality rates are decreasing as we are getting better at treating patients.

Healthier fats are monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats and this includes avocados, fish and almonds.
Redwood added: “Heart attacks are increasing as we live longer but the mortality rates are decreasing as we are getting better at treating patients.”
You should consult your doctor if the wheezing symptoms are followed by swelling in the feet and ankles, trouble breathing, high fever or worsening of pre-existing shortness of breath.
Make a list of symptoms, key personal information, all medications and questions to ask your doctor.
Your doctor will be able to tell you how severe your symptoms are, if you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol. Your doctor will also advise what the next treatment is best for you.
