Coronavirus: Husband warns of dangers after wife dies in hospital
In a Downing Street briefing yesterday evening, Sir Patrick Vallance said the B117 variant – first identified in London and the South East – was up to 30 percent more deadly, as well as being more transmissible. The classic triad of symptoms still applies to the B117 coronavirus strain:
- A new, continuous cough
- A loss or change to your sense of smell or taste
- A high temperature
These are the most common signs of a Covid infection, reported AgeUK.
The leading charity for older people listed other reported symptoms of the disease.
For example, some people may experience stomach discomfort and diarrhoea.
Others could become confused and suffer from delirium – described as a “state of mental confusion” by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
The Royal College of Psychiatrists added that a person with delirium doesn’t know where they are, what time it is, or what is happening to them.
AgeUK noted that some people who have contracted Covid have noted a blocked or runny nose.

Some people who have been infected with the disease suffered from a sore throat.
In addition, certain individuals have reported that they suffer from shortness of breath.
Anyone who develops coronavirus symptoms are urged by the NHS to self-isolate and to book a free NHS coronavirus test as soon as possible.
For anybody who feels as though their symptoms are unmanageable, do call NHS 111 or use the NHS online tool.
Everybody is at risk of catching the disease, although AgeUK states that four in five people will only experience mild to moderate symptoms.
However, some people are much more likely than others to become seriously unwell.
This includes people over the age of 70, even if they’re otherwise healthy, and those living with underlying health conditions.
As of Thursday, January 21, government data reported that 5,383,103 people in the UK have received their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine.
By the same time period, 466,796 have received their second jab of the coronavirus vaccine.
The Herculean vaccination roll-out continues, as two vaccinations are currently in circulation: the Pfizer/BioNTech and Oxford/AstraZeneca.
The Moderna vaccine is planned to be administered from the spring of this year.
Thankfully, the estimated “R” (rate of infection) number in England is between 0.8 and one, meaning the pandemic is likely shrinking.
This suggests the benefits of the national lockdown are starting to take effect.
However, caution is still needed as the B117 variant is more contagious than other strains.
Professor Vallance suggested that if 1,000 people in their 60s were infected with the old variant, roughly 10 of them would pass away.
In terms of the B117 variant, the numbers of deaths would rise to 13 for every 1,000 people.
